Last week's seminar at GS1 about traceability highlighted the extent of debate currently taking place within the food industry about traceability and the lack of awareness around the competitive advantage benefits it brings.

All too frequently, traceability is regarded negatively as a cost and compliance issue rather than as a source of competitive advantage and opportunity, says James Hannay, Senior VP Northern Europe for Zetes (Track and Trace Specialists).  Traceability does have a cost implication, but the return on investment is fast and the added value it brings will sustain a business for the future, long after the initial outlay has been recouped.
