If you follow the demand signal from the consumer and see how this is converted to forecasts, production and delivery schedules, the chances are that you will not be able to understand the complexity of information flow that is ingrained across the chain.

Taking a walk along the supply chain from raw materials to the final consumer can be enlightening! It can show how value is being added at different stages and conversely how much time the product spends waiting or being handled twice or put into storage, all non-value adding activity creating costs in your chain.

IGD followed 33 individual primary based food products, like bread, milk, steak and apples from the farm where they were grown to the final customer - often retailers, but also private and public caterers. The aim of this work was to understand how 'lean thinking' could be applied to improve supply chain collaboration and increase the efficiency of businesses in each chain.
